Surface Laptop Price Increase

Microsoft has implemented significant price increases across its entire Surface Laptop lineup in April 2026, with base models now costing $300–$500 more than their original 2024 launch prices. The hikes are driven by a historic global memory chip shortage and rising component costs, marking the latest move by a PC maker to pass along pressures to consumers.

Key Price Changes by Model

Surface Laptop Model Original 2024 Price 2025 Price Current 2026 Price Increase
13-inch (entry-level) $899 $899 $1,149 +$250
13.8-inch flagship $999 $1,199 $1,499 +$500
15-inch model $1,299 $1,499 $1,599 +$300
15-inch (64GB RAM, 1TB SSD) N/A N/A $3,649 New top price tech.

The most dramatic increase hit the 13.8-inch Surface Laptop, which jumped $500 from its launch price of $999 to the current $1,499. This model, powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite/Plus chips, is now nearly $400 more expensive than Apple’s MacBook Air.

Why Prices Are Rising

Microsoft explicitly attributed the price revisions to “recent increases in memory and component costs” in an official statement. The company has a limited ability to maintain pricing stability, noting it will regularly assess pricing based on “market conditions and operational costs.

The root cause is a historic memory chip shortage affecting the entire PC industry. Other companies, including Motorola and Samsung, have also raised prices on their latest devices due to similar supply constraints.

What This Means for Buyers

  • Flagship models now cost 1.5× their launch price compared to 2024

  • Even midrange devices now start above $1,000, whereas previously the cheapest modern Surface PC (12-inch Surface Pro) was $799

  • Some retailers like Amazon and Best Buy still offer older pricing on select models (e.g., 13.8-inch Surface Laptop for $1,199 at Best Buy)

  • Top-end configurations are now priced higher than comparable MacBook Pro models — the 15-inch Surface Laptop with 64GB RAM costs $3,649 vs. $3,299 for the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5tech.

Future Outlook

Technology media outlets are concerned that next-generation Surface hardware expected in spring/summer 2026 will also see price increases, given the ongoing RAM crisis and supply chain pressures. Microsoft’s statement confirmed it will “regularly review and assess pricing” rather than committing to future stability.

For consumers, this means now may be the last chance to buy Surface Laptops at pre-hike prices while some retailers haven’t yet updated their listings. However, with the memory shortage showing no immediate relief, expect continued inflationary pressure on tech products throughout 2026.
